What to Expect at Your First Orthodontist Visit

Going to your first orthodontist appointment can be exciting and a little nerve-wracking. Rest assured, there’s nothing to fear. An initial visit is mostly about getting to know you and understanding your unique smile. Here’s what usually happens during that first visit:

Arrival and Check-in

When you arrive, you’ll check in at the front desk. You may fill out some forms about your dental history and any concerns you have. This paperwork helps the orthodontist and the team understand your needs.

Health and Dental History

Health and Dental History

Before any exam, our orthodontist, Dr. John, will review your general health and dental history. You might talk about any past dental treatments, orthodontic history, or current medications. Sharing information about allergies or special needs ensures your treatment plan is safe and effective.

Oral Examination

Next, our team will perform a thorough examination. They will look at your teeth, gums, bite, and jaw alignment. The orthodontist may have you open and close your mouth, bite together, and move your jaw side to side. This step checks for issues like crowding, gaps, overbite, underbite, or crossbite.

Diagnostic Imaging

To get a complete picture of your oral health, Dr. John will likely take X-rays and digital photos of your teeth and jaws. These images help the doctor see beneath the surface and analyze how your jaws line up. Photographs of your smile from different angles are also taken. All this information guides the treatment plan.

Discussion and Treatment Planning

After the exam and imaging, we’ll explain what we find and discuss whether you need braces, clear aligners, or possibly no treatment at this time. If treatment is recommended, we’ll outline the options and explain how they work. For example, we may compare traditional braces to clear aligners, discussing the pros and cons of each. You can ask questions about how long treatment might take, how often you’ll come in for visits, and what results you can expect.

Records and Impressions

Sometimes, we may take an impression or a digital scan of your teeth during the first visit. This involves biting into a soft putty or having a small scanning wand moved around your teeth. These records create an exact model of your teeth, which helps in designing your appliances. If impressions are not done on the first visit, they might be scheduled for your next visit.

Discussion and Treatment Planning

Next Steps

Before you leave, the office will explain the next steps. If you are ready to move forward, you will schedule an appointment to get your braces or aligners placed. If your orthodontist recommends waiting or monitoring your growth (common for younger patients), they will schedule periodic check-ups instead.

By the end of your first visit, you will likely have:

  • Clear diagnosis: an understanding of any alignment issues or concerns the doctor found.
  • Treatment options: an explanation of recommended treatments (like braces or aligners) and how they work.
  • Plan outline: a general timeline of what your treatment could involve and how long it may take.
  • Answers to your questions: the opportunity to ask anything on your mind (be sure to ask about comfort, care, costs, etc.).
  • Next appointments: a plan for when to return, whether to start treatment or to continue monitoring.

Patient Comfort

Throughout the visit, let our team know if you feel anxious. We will do everything possible to make you feel comfortable. The first visit is typically very calm and non-invasive. You will not get any wires or braces placed until you decide on treatment. If your teeth feel a bit tired or sensitive after impressions or X-rays, that sensation usually goes away quickly.

Remember: The first orthodontist appointment is all about understanding your smile. It sets the foundation for creating a plan tailored just for you. By the end of the visit, you should feel informed, comfortable, and confident about the path forward to a healthier, more aligned smile.
